Community Proposal: Project for Mental Health and Safety
Jan 18, 2022
This document summarizes a conversation about a proposal to improve the safety and mental health of community members. The proposal includes the use of a global positioning tracker for member safety and a beacon system for mental health emergencies.
Background
Some community members, particularly passive contributors and those in regions with geo-political instability, may find themselves at mental health risks. Active members may also be at risk due to cognitive overload. The proposal aims to address these risks and make the community safer.
Global Positioning Tracker
The Foundation's communications infrastructure provides geo-location trackers. These trackers can approximate a member's location via their IP address. However, the proposal suggests the use of a global positioning tracker for member safety. This tracker would allow members to send a beacon to the community in case of a mental health emergency.
Beacon System
The beacon system would work as follows: when a member broadcasts a beacon, another community member may get active and inquire about their peer's mental well-being. This system would rely on the willingness of community members to respond to these beacons.
Challenges
The main challenges identified in the conversation are:
Preparing community members for emergencies
Ensuring the availability of members at the required time
Maintaining connectivity to the member in need
Proposed Solutions
The proposed solutions to these challenges include:
Maintaining a region-based database to connect the care seeker with the nearest community member
Offering support to the care provider in case of emergency
Using the Disaster Management Recovery Plan & Continuity Policy on the Open Constitution AI network as a basis for preparation
Ensuring global media accessibility in case a local crisis needs urgent attention
Further Discussion
The conversation ended with a question about the existence of an SOS button on the community channels. This question remains open for further discussion.
